Hirohito was born in Tokyo on April 29, 1901. Japan itself was suffering a rebirth. Four years hence Japan would beat Russia and emerge as the strongest country on the Pacific Ocean
Hirohito was separated from his parents shortly after birth. He was cared for by a vice admiral in the imperial (of the empire) navy until November 1904, when he returned to the Akasaka Palace, his parents' official residence. Even after his return to the palace, he was only allowed to see his mother once a week and hardly ever spent time with his father.
Many believed that Hirohito was an evil mastermind behind the war while others claimed that he was simply a powerless figurehead. Modern historians take the view that neither extreme statement is justified, but the exact level of responsibility that Hirohito had for the war remains a matter of dispute. Up until soon before the start of the war, Hirohito behaved strictly according to protocol, remaining at a distance from the decision making processes.
Hirohito became emperor on the death of his father in December 1926. He therefore became the 124th emperor in direct lineage.
